First discovered in 1772 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele. And isolated in 1808 by Humphry Davy using the method electrolysis Molten Baryta ( Also known as Barium Oxide ) or Barium Chloride ( BaCI )
Another method of extracting Barium is the reaction of Barium Oxide with Aluminum or Silicon. As he reacted Aluminium or Silicon with Barium Oxide, The oxide on Barium was somehow absorbed by Aluminium or Silicon, which forms Aluminium Oxide or Silicon Oxide. Finally, Barium was isolated.
Here is the chemical equation : BaO + Al = Ba + AlO
Here is the word equation : Barium Oxide + Aluminium = Barium + Aluminium Oxide
Atomic Number : 56
Name : Barium
Latin Name : Barys
Electrons per Shell : [ 2, 8, 18, 18, 8, 8 ]
Discoverer : Carl Wilhelm Scheele ( 1772 )
Isolator : Humphry Davy ( 1808 )
Elements : Atomic Mass : 137.327u
: Density : 3.62 g/c㎥
: Types : Alkali Earth Metal
Chemical Properties
- combines easily with oxygen, the halogens, and other non-metals.
- Reacts with water and with most acids
Must be stored under kerosene, petroleum, or some other oily liquid to preventit from reacting with oxygen and moisture in the air.Barium Isotope
Physical Properties :
- Pale yellow
- Shiny
- Malleable
- Very very TOXIC!
- Melting Point : 700 degrees Celsius ( 1300 Fahrenheit )
- Boiling Point : 1500 degrees Celsius ( 2700 Fahrenheit )
How Barium got its name?
Barium got its name from the greek word βαρύς (barys), which means heavy. It was given this name because it was found in a mineral called Barite ( Barium Sulfate ). Barite was given this name because it has a very high density.
Uses
Different isotopes of Barium has different uses. These isotopes was used as rat poison, oil - drilling fluids and the white fluid used in x - ray diagnostic test, used to visualize intestines. Fishes, seaweed and certain plants may also contain Barium. ( But don't worry, the Barium inside fishes has been taken away ( somehow ) and it's now consumable, so don't worry! )
Rat Killer ( Not Recommended for consuming ) |
THIS IS THE END OF BARIUM
